When Will They Be Back????

Published by sottile at 10:02 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

At the end of 1985’s Silverado (starring Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline, Danny Glover and Kevin Costner), Costner’s character says “we’ll be back.”

Here it is 23 years later and there’s been no further sign of Emmett (Glenn), Paden (Kline), Mal (Glover) or Jake (Costner).  Lawrence Kasdan……why not?!?!?

In Silverado Kasdan created a gem of  a Western.  The dialogue sparkles.   Surely, Mal’s “now I don’t want to kill you and you don’t want to be dead” comes across just as strikingly as Rick’s “here’s looking at you” (in Casablanca) or Dirty Harry’s “go ahead, make my day.”

All key aspects of the movie display a marvelous symmetry.  Take for example, the firearms the lead characters use (and how they use them).  Aside from being crack shots, all, Emmet uses a pistol with his left hand, while Paden uses one with his right.  Jake, on the other hand, has a two-gun rig, while Mal eschews pistols in favor of a rifle.

Also, their horses complement each other in coloring, ranging from Paden’s bay to Jake’s pinto.

While the movie ends with “the good guys” being victorious over “the bad guys,” it also leaves spectators wanting more.  Even today, over two decades later, the question remains–what became of Emmet, Jake, Mal and Paden, once they had rid the town of Silverado of Cobb (Brian Dennehy) and his crew?

Lawrence Kasdan, are you listening????
