Ruling Herself Out
When viewing Jane Fonda in movies such as Georgie Rule, in which her acting skills are thoroughly wasted, one has to wonder why she agreed to sign on to do the movie in the first place.
In her autobiography, Fonda provides vivid detail about her earlier successes and how they came about. Discounting Barbarella, consider her winning work in movies such as Klute, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Coming Home, The China Syndrome, On Golden Pond, and The Electric Horseman. Twice she has received an Oscar for best actress.
True enough she had her own production company during her heyday, facilitating her ability to make the type of movies she wanted to make. And, of course, On Golden Pond was a special labor of love, since it allowed her to appear on the big screen with her father, Henry. During the filming of that movie, they succeeded in narrowing some of the gaps between them in their personal lives.
It’s almost painful now to see her in such atrocities as Monster-in-Law and Georgie Rule.
